I usually go the same route. Utilizing the dresser and closet. I go one step further though. I fold the dirty laundry so it fits nicely in the dirty laundry bags most hotels provide. I always over pack, so I don't want dirty clothes packed away with clean clothes when we leave.

That hotel room with kids gets so messy so fast! And then packing is nerve wracking because things are all over the place. We started unpacking in the room, utilizing the drawers and closet, leaving the suitcase empty. Then all the dirty clothes got put in the suitcase as needed. Solved my anxiety over packing up, and kept the room less messy. It was so successful, I still do this when I travel alone!
